Anne Arundel County Recycles. More. Often. and You Can Too!

Recycling on the Go  Have you visited a park in Anne Arundel County lately?  Notice anything different?

To help you recycle while you’re out and about, we’ve placed recycling containers in select Anne Arundel County parks and athletic fields.  Now, you can recycle at the park the same things you can recycle at home!  We encourage all of our residents to take advantage of recycling opportunities WHEREVER you go.  If you are at a park that doesn’t yet recycle, please take your materials home and recycle them there.

You make a choice with every item you throw away, a choice between throwing it in the recycling container or throwing it in the trash can.  We encourage you to recycle at home, at work and on the go.  Please visit our website at www.RecycleMoreOften.com for a list of parks currently recycling and to take the 50/50 Challenge.

Every year, in late May/early June we experience an increased number of incidents at the beach like the ones you reported. They commonly occur on weekdays after school lets out. Sometimes Pines teens are involved; quite it’s a group of teens from outside our community. In my experience, the problem can be nipped in the bud if the following actions are consistently taken:

1) Pines boaters should lock their small boats to the racks so they cannot be easily removed by unauthorized persons. This point was certainly underscored by last year’s vandalism/thefts involving a number of boats moored in Chase Creek. Three young males took a canoe from our racks to paddle out to the moorings. Fortunately they were spotted by Ted Jones, who called the police. All three were arrested and subsequently pled guilty. Anyone who owns a small boat that is not locked to its rack is raising the risk of theft/vandalism for everyone, not just themselves.

2) Every Pines resident who visits the beach should be alert to signs of possible/actual vandalism. If they aren’t comfortable taking direct action as Howard did, they should ask for assistance from other residents who may be nearby, or call the police and/or me as appropriate. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away.

3) The gate to the beach parking lot should be closed after 9 p.m. daily. Since we don’t have a regular security patrol, residents who use the beach need to be alert to the importance of closing the gate themselves when appropriate.
